Jeanne Rayphand (CAMI Vice-President) and Kaye Christian (CAMI Treasurer) asked for further clarification from CGC of how much of the $10,000 will go to CAMI since there seems to be a confusion involving CGC's reimbursement for Kaye's payment ($2,161.10) for George Badillo to come out here to train.

3. At this point, it is unclear whether CGC has already included Kaye's reimbursement into the $10,000 (Tilde Rosario will check with CGC's Director and update CAMI officers regarding this).

4. Jeanne Rayphand motioned (and the motion was seconded) to have CGC reimburse Kaye directly.

5. Steve (CAMI Secretary), shared that he and his wife will be leaving island and will be vacating his position as CAMI Secretary. Steve will remain as Secretary until a replacement is found.

6. Steve offered to help in continuing to maintain CAMI's blog/website at http://cami-cnmi.blogspot.com/ from the U.S. mainland.

7. Kaye will gather old and new CAMI officers to do the bank transfer of names. All officers will meet with Kaye at the bank to sign.

8. Jeanne asked what limits/restrictions regarding what CAMI can do with the $10,000 from CGC. Tilde (CGC) responded that CAMI is free to do "anything you want."

9. Maria and Kaye shared about their trip to Honolulu to visit the Clubhouses there. Main difference is that those Clubhouses had kitchens which gave people opportunities to learn about working.

10. Tilde gave background information on how Saipan's Clubhouse got started, as a social support group.

11. Kaye explained that the original vision was for one person to man the Clubhouse in the evening a few hours a week.

12. Steve shared his thoughts about what it takes to make for a successful supported employment and social support program - a lot of people and support from different agencies.

13. Katharyn brought up that having a kitchen will mean that there are more requirements to comply with.

14. Maria asked why not use TLC's kitchen for Clubhouse purposes since the two programs are under CGC. Tilde explained that TLC (Transition Living Center) is very limited and restricted in who can come and go.

15. Jeanne asked Tilde if the money appropriate to CAMI is limited to mentally ill clients or can it be used for those with developmental disability.

16. Tilde responded that the funds are not restricted.

17. Steve announced his upcoming "School Crisis Response Training" (a joint Beautify CNMI and CAMI-CNMI Project), available FREE, on June 13, 2007 from 6:00-9:00pm at the Multi-Purpose Center in Saipan.

18. Jeanne motioned to end meeting. Steve seconded the motion.

Meeting ended 8:10pm.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4126792954842635355.post-36850901492862907212007-04-25T23:48:00.000+10:002007-04-26T00:20:40.534+10:00CNMI Mental Health Awareness Month Proclamation
Photo: Jacqueline Hernandez

This May 2007, like every May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It is a time to raise awareness about mental illnesses and the importance of mental wellness for all. The photo above shows government entities and officials along with mental health providers and consumers from throughout Saipan.
I’m reproducing verbatim of the best part of the proclamation because I think it captures the ideals of a good mental health system for the CNMI.

Mental health is an important part of our everyday lives. Mental illness can affect individuals regardless of race, gender, age, ethnicity, language, or place of residence. The functional impairments associated with mental illness can significantly limit or interfere with major life activities, such as basic living skills, instrumental living skills, as well as social, family, and vocational activities. Mental illness not only affects the actual consumers of mental health services, but also their family members, friends, and loved ones.

Despite all this, mental illness is treatable and recovery is possible. The theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Month is “There’s Hope, There’s Help.” This simple idea shows that even the smallest effort can make a big difference. We must focus inward on utilizing local resources and island way of life to transform how the CNMI addresses mental health. Educational and awareness activities must be increased in order to enhance our understanding of mental health and address the stigma and negative attitudes commonly associated with mental illness. Consumers and family members must continue to take an active role in making mental health services system more responsible. Collaborative ties must be strengthened between government agencies, private organizations, consumers, family members, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the effective coordination of services and state resources. Hope lies within these smallest of efforts. It is up to us, as a community, to take the initiative and help each other shape our mental health services system into one that best serves the people of the CNMI.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4126792954842635355.post-76402918662681065172007-04-16T01:14:00.000+10:002007-04-19T07:57:24.129+10:00Mental Health Presentations by George BadilloGeorge Badillo is a Peer Trainer.

He works out of the New York State Office of Mental Health Long Island Field Office, providing training to people with psychiatric histories. This lasted about 1.5 years.

• The Clubhouse was given $12,000 USD to staff and operate for 25 hours a week. There were many generous people who donated materials. Most of this amount went to supplies, gas coupons, & consumer stipends.

• We will use $1942.50 to pay for George & his son Brandon to come here to Saipan to conduct mental illness training and peer support training. If you recall, George was the person in the video Inside-Outside, a story about mental health consumers who transitioned from being hospitalized/institutionalized back into the community. He was hospitalized 17 times and despite those obstacles, he manages his own consulting firm today.

• NMPASI will assist in paying for George's training fees and they will also sponsor a "kick-off dinner".

• Next week, Kaye, Maria, and Bernie will attend the Evidence-Based Practices in Hawaii. They will visit 4 Clubhouses to learn on ways to improve on Saipan's Clubhouse and make it bigger and better.

• The true idea of a "Clubhouse" is training peers (mental health consumers) to get jobs in the community.

• The former Saipan Clubhouse (now called Guma Dinana or "meeting place"), had several limitations, namely that it did not have a kitchen or a backyard in which to train consumers on life & job skills (such as cooking, cleaning, yard work, etc.)

• A new place has been identified in the community [Kaye has located a place and is calling it "My House"]. My House will serve the idea of a "Clubhouse" much better because it is a "house" in every sense of the word, with a gas stove, bedrooms, kitchen, and backyard. My House will serve as a peer support as well as job training for consumers to gain employment in the community.

• Eventually, CAMI-CNMI will be headquartered at "My House" once Kaye has had a chance to move in and get settled. Right now the place is still "full of boxes."

• We, however, can still use Guma Dinana as a meeting place. We just need to coordinate with Patrick to have access to it. Kaye will arrange for this.

• CGC (Community Guidance Center) is interested in creating another MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) to operate Guma Dinana. The status of this is unclear.

• April 26-29th is the Flame Tree Festival and the month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month. CAMI-CNMI is planning on participating with its own booth at the Flame Tree to bring awareness about mental illness! We will be selling arts & crafts (like mar mars with Rita from First Floral Shop's help).

• Anyone with arts/crafts who want to display their talents and help raise money and awareness for CAMI-CNMI is encouraged to showcase their arts & crafts.

• EXCITING NEWS: CAMI-CNMI is proud to announce that two of its own have been acknowledged and honored by the CNMI Council on Developmental Disabilities (DD Council) as advocates for mental health/mental illness. The DD Council recognized:

(1) Rita Cruz, owner of The First Floral Shop (in Garapan) as Business Advocate of the Year!
(2) Kaye Christian, CAMI-CNMI's former President (and now Treasurer of CAMI-CNMI) as Advocate of the Year!

There will be a celebration picnic this Sat. March 31st, 10am-2pm at the pavillion in Kilili Beach (across from Ada Gym) to honor these advocates. CAMI-CNMI invites and encourages all to come out to lend their support and thanks to these and other advocates for mental health and developmental disabilities.

• Finally, we voted for CAMI-CNMI Officers:

President - Maria Islam
Vice-President - Jeanne Rayphand
Treasurer - Kaye Christian
Secretary - Steve Nguyen

• In the upcoming weeks & months, we will partner up and ask for support from the Rotary Club of Saipan and the Chamber of Commerce (thanks to Angel & Bernie for these great ideas)!

• Thanks to Rhonda Camacho (SVES Teacher & F-Crew member) & Bev Cabanatan (Dental Hygienist) for coming up with fun and simple activities to do. We are looking at planning for a either a Mini-Carnival, a Picnic, Bowling, and/or Karaoke in the next few weeks. Please expect more info from me.

• Please think about ways to be creative in our fundraising because we will need to raise money to help keep CAMI-CNMI going and to wipe out the stigmas of mental illness here on our islands.

• Remember CAMI-CNMI's goals are twofold: (1) getting the business community to recognize the abilities of the mental health consumers and partnering with us to provide these consumers with jobs, and (2) getting community members to join in simple & fun activities with the mental health consumers.

Steve Nguyen, MA, BCSCR
www.beyondbehaviors.com
Behavior Specialist, PSS Special Education
Board Certified in School Crisis Response™
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Certified InstructorAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4126792954842635355.post-11293432800074473872007-03-22T10:50:00.000+10:002007-03-22T11:29:31.115+10:00CAMI's StatusI want to update all of our loyal CAMI-CNMI friends and supporters on our current status. Due to a few logistical reasons, our volunteering activities have stopped since the painting activity one month ago.

We're not short on volunteers as there are plenty of people willing and able to help out.

CAMI-CNMI is still about doing simple and fun things. We are still about coordinating volunteer efforts to share in fun activities with the mental health consumers. This will not change.

I am still very much interested in getting the mental health consumers out and for the community to share in fun activities with them. However, we will need to think creatively in terms of (1) what (2) where (3) how. Here are a two ideas:

1) Have a picnic: It doesn't have to be big, we could meet at the park and it'd be pot-luck with everyone bringing a little something.

2) Karaoke: We still have our crazy and lovable F-crew from San Vicente Elementary who loves to sing. We just need the karaoke machine, 1 or 2 small speakers, a place to plug those things in, a pavillion (outdoor) or someone's big house, and people.

What other fun things can we do? Please let me know your ideas. Thanks again for your support and understanding. We live in challenging times, but we don't have to let those things dictate our willingness to help others. Have a nice day.

Steve Nguyen, MA, CASA
www.beyondbehaviors.com
Behavior Specialist, PSS Special Education
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Certified Instructor
Member, American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress®Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4126792954842635355.post-52639682783928622992007-02-24T23:34:00.000+10:002007-02-24T23:59:46.085+10:00Artistic MasterpiecesWhat a great time we had today (11 people came out to participate) doing the painting activity under the direction of Jeanne Rayphand (who also donated the acrylic paint and brought her own brushes for us to use).

We have some really talented people displaying some amazing artwork. Beneath her calm demeanor beats the heart of a giving person. Rita is the owner of The First Floral Shop (in Garapan). Every year, around Valentine's Day, her shop works overtime to fulfill the orders and calls for everything from a single rose to elaborate floral arrangements.

First opened on June 15, 1981 (over 25 years ago), First Floral is truly unique in that it is one of the few locally owned businesses surviving and thriving in a down economy. When asked how she started her business, Rita thought carefully and recounted the story of her supervisor giving her flowers during Secretary Week. "My boss gave me flowers and I cried." That's what motivated her to open a floral shop - to be able to share that same great feeling when people receive flowers.

"I pioneered all these flower deliveries here on Saipan. Before that nobody delivered," she added.

Starting any business is scary, but starting one with little or no business background is terrifying. Rita learned on-the-job. It's all about the visual presentation, creativity, and imagination according to Rita.

"It's hard work. You always have to be on top of things -- the details."

Watching Rita work is like watching an artist. When she touched the flowers, she's able to bring them to life!

For Valentine's 2007, Rita and First Floral decided to try something very different...something special. She trained and hired mental health consumers to work in her shop. With six full-time staff members, Rita recruited six more (3 of whom are mental health consumers) to help handle the increased workload during Valentine's Day.

On Sunday, February 11, 2007, First Floral helped to break the stigmas of mental illness by inviting eight mental health consumers and their family members to its shop for a "crash-course" training on floral arrangement. Rita and her fantastic staff spent three hours training, reviewing, and critiquing each of the neatly, knotted bows and the single rose arrangements. They gave pointers and helped the mental health consumers to understand the art and science of floral arrangement. "By turning it a little bit, you can tell and find its best angle," she explained.

Rita spent almost one hour delicately arranging the roses while teaching the group. She took great pride is sharing with us that First Floral only uses flowers and roses directly from the U.S. "You can tell," she commented, referring to the subpar qualities of flowers from other countries.

The idea of a transitional and meaningful employment for the mental health consumers came from Kaye Christian as she works tirelessly to advocate for the rights of the mentally ill. Kaye started by asking Rita to help consumers learn how to make bows for Christmas wreaths.

Thanks to two wonderful women, Rita Cruz (owner of First Floral) and Kaye Christian (co-founder of CAMI-CNMI), mental health consumers started their paid jobs this week. Starting on Monday February 12 through Wednesday, February 14, 2007, the Coalition on the Anti-Stigmas of Mental Illness in the CNMI (CAMI-CNMI), encourages the Northern Marianas community to stop by First Floral in Garapan (670.233.7482 or email: 1floral@pticom.com) to support our home-grown floral shop and at the same time support the mission of CAMI-CNMI to rid our islands of the stigmas of mental illness. By gainfully employing qualified and competent mental health consumers, businesses like First Floral serve to shatter those erroneous beliefs and fears about the mentally ill. So if you're planning on getting flowers for your loved ones, please help our cause by getting them from First Floral Shop.

"Not only are we the first...we're the finest!" proclaims Rita.

CAMI-CNMI applauds the efforts of the First Floral Shop because of its "double-dose-of-goodness" commitment to: (1) Hire from the Existing Pool of Local Workers, and (2) Partnering and sharing in CAMI-CNMI's goal of community service and eradicating the stigmas of mental illness from our islands.

CAMI-CNMI's Community Business Partner:
The First Floral Shop (located in Garapan)
ph: 670.233.7482
email: 1floral@pticom.com

For more information on how to get involved in CAMI-CNMI:
Steve Nguyen, Behavior Specialist
Co-Founder, CAMI-CNMI
http://cami-cnmi.blogspot.com/
http://www.beyondbehaviors.com/Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4126792954842635355.post-49031558542913967952007-02-11T18:50:00.000+10:002007-02-11T00:04:31.861+10:00Passionate PeopleThere are three kinds of people in the world - those who avoid things like it was the plague, those who complain about anything and everything, and those who do something about it. Just like their names, avoiders are great at one thing, avoiding. They avoid a challenge. They avoid difficult situations and they avoid responsibilities. Watching avoiders pretend to work is like watching vampires pretend to love the sun. It's just painful to see.

Like avoiders, complainers shirk responsibilities. Why? Because they spend more time complaining then actually working. For them the world is made up of a series of unfortunate events. Complainers see the glass half empty. In fact, sometimes they don't even see the water in the glass. At times, I wonder if they even see the glass at all.

Admittedly, I sometimes fall into the complainers group. I try not to get into that pattern of thinking, but I sometimes fail. What often keeps me in line, motivated, and focused, however, are what I called "passionate people." Passionate people don't do their jobs because they get paid. They do their jobs because that thing that's inside them drives them to do what's right and to finish what they've started. Passionate people don't rest. They never rest because they're the ones who carry the loads left behind by the avoiders and complainers.

There is a handful of professionals here in Saipan that I consider passionate people. Kaye Christian, CAMI-CNMI Co-Founder and NMPASI Board Member, is one such individual. I count my lucky stars every time I have the pleasure of collaborating with her. When I'm swamped with work or discouraged by things, her passion to serve the mentally ill inspires me. Through her love for her volunteer work and in her passionate manner in carrying out her duties, she reminds me of what Gandhi once said:

We need to be the change we want to see happen.
We are the leaders we have been waiting for.

Thanks Kaye...for being who you are.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4126792954842635355.post-48927822396817601762007-02-10T23:54:00.000+10:002007-02-25T00:45:11.226+10:00CAMI-CNMI was glad to help out!

Angelo & Beautify CNMI, [also posted on Beautify CNMI]

On behalf of CAMI-CNMI, Coalition on the Anti-Stigmas of Mental Illness in the CNMI, I would like to say thank for making our first volunteer project a great success. We appreciate you and the folks at Beautify CNMI for providing the trash bags, gloves, and donuts! What a beautiful day it was this morning to wake up and see just how gorgeous our island is. Sadly, when we saw the amount of trash (from cigarette butts, to broken glass, beer bottles, to a refrigerator, fans, microwaves, spare tires, and so many other things that should never be dumped on our beautify beaches or inside the bushes in the villages) we were saddened.

But seeing the bright, smiley faces of true volunteers who give of their time was inspiring. We met people like Juanita and her son Adam who regularly come on Saturdays to help keep our island clean. No one paid them. No one made them. They just wanted to help out. That, to me, is the truest meaning of service - to give and expect nothing in return, except for feeling good that you helped!

I also want to take this opportunity to thank Kaye Christian (CAMI-CNMI Co-Founder) and the staff members of TLC who assisted in transportaing our mental health consumers out to join us. Likewise, I also want to thank Amanda (from SIS), Tee & Dr. Abraham, and so many others who (due to time) we didn't get a chance to meet and chat with. Thank you all 77 volunteers for your help with 2,580 lbs. of trash and for working alongside our mental health consumers to rid our island of the stigmas of mental illness.

CAMI-CNMI looks forward to partnering with Beautify CNMI in the near future. The film depicts the lives of eight people with very significant histories of institutionalization, as they transition from nursing homes and psychiatric hospitals into the community. In the spirit of the President’s New Freedom Initiative and the Supreme Court’s Olmstead Decision, the film carries the message that recovery and life in the community are possibilities even for people who are viewed as the most chronic or impaired. The film leaves audiences of professionals and people with psychiatric disabilities alike, cheering for these eight individuals as they make their journey from inside institutions to full community inclusion on the outside. Running Time: 50 minutes.

The 4 key stages that Dr. Deegan talks about are:

1) Inside Inside: "I'm inside the hospital" physically but also begin to believe it mentally.
2) Inside Outside: You get a glimpse of hope that even though you're inside physically, you begin to mentally believe that there's hope beyond the hospital walls.
3) Outside Inside: Once discharged from the hospital (you're now outside), you continue to trap yourself thinking like you were still inside because you were so used to people telling you when to eat, bathe, take your meds, and what to do and when to do things.
4) Outside Outside: The last stage where you regain your life back, physically, mentally, and emotionally!

I highly encourage everyone to watch this wonderful movie. Two tips on overcoming the stigmas of mental illness include:

(1) Recognize that mental illness, while it can be more dangerous than a physical illness, is just that—an illness. Those who suffer from a mental illness are not mentally deficient in their mental capacity; they just have had a chemical imbalance or a severe head injury which hinders their ability to function normally in a certain part of a mental ability of function.

(2) People must be more willing to talk about how they feel to others, and those who are listening must not be judgmental or make the person out to be mentally deficient if they seem to be having problems with a mental illness.

Wishing our visitors good mental and physical health and please remember to "lend a real helping hand" in your neighborhood, in your town, and in your part of the world.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4126792954842635355.post-86226932991323911122007-01-26T01:00:00.000+10:002007-01-26T01:04:32.394+10:00Saipan Tribune - Letters to the EditorThe Saipan Tribune has posted a letter I sent to its editor, titled Looking for some "real helping hands." The letter gives some background information on how CAMI-CNMI started and what its basic goal is.

I started CAMI-CNMI with the help of Kaye Christian and my wife, Miwa, because of the need to eliminate erroneous beliefs and fears about mental illness in the world, especially here in the Northern Mariana Islands. As founder of CAMI-CNMI: Coalition on the Anti-Stigmas of Mental Illness in the CNMI (a mental health awareness group), my desire and hope is that together, as we get volunteers in the community involved in the lives of our mental health consumers and join together in shared activities that we will wipe out these terrible stigmas of mental illness here on our islands.

One thing which I forgot to explain in the letter was the Clubhouse. The Clubhouse is a part of the Community Guidance Center (CGC). It's actually an extension of the Transition Living Center (TLC), their day program. Basically the Clubhouse is a place where mentally ill consumers (both in-patient & out-patient) can come and hangout and do activities with the idea of training them for transitional employment, where they work in the community at real jobs.

It is important to mention that the Clubhouse is just one part of CAMI-CNMI and it's where we're going to focus our volunteer efforts until the group becomes strong enough to branch out to other activities. CAMI-CNMI gathers community volunteers to do activities with Clubhouse members. However, our aim is to have our volunteers share in activities and events with ALL consumers of mental health and/or those with mental illness here on Saipan, even those who are not part of the Clubhouse.

You see the beauty of CAMI-CNMI is that we are not tied to any group because we are consumer-driven (as Kaye would say). In that sense, we answer to the needs of the consumers and members, not any agency or organization. Thus, we maintain a more politically-neutral stance and (try) not to get caught up in the bureaucratic mess.

Right now the goal of CAMI-CNMI is simple: to get community volunteers to do activities and projects with mental health consumers of the Clubhouse.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0
